Social anxiety disorder (SAD), also referred to as social phobia, is listed in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5) as a chronic mental health condition. Social anxiety during adolescence extends beyond typical shyness, encapsulating an intense fear of negative judgment or evaluation in social situations. Social anxiety disorder is the third most common mental disorder, and the prevalence of adolescent SAD is an estimated 9.4% in America. Social anxiety can be particularly challenging for teenagers, impacting their ability to navigate social interactions crucial for personal development.

Group therapy, as explained by Verywell Mind, “is a form of psychotherapy that involves one or more therapists working with several people at the same time.” Research shows that group therapy is a useful clinical practice for adolescents with mental health issues, including social anxiety, as well as those with general issues such as anger, shyness, loneliness, and low self-esteem. Group therapy offers a unique and effective approach to addressing social anxiety in a supportive environment, as its collective setting fosters a sense of community, shared understanding, and the gradual development of confidence.

Group therapy sessions provide an emotionally safe and structured environment, allowing young people to have positive social interactions with peers that promote social skills, create supportive bonds, and cultivate a sense of comradery within the group. Group therapy helps teenagers increase their capacity for self-expression and emotional assertiveness, as this process encourages teens to learn about themselves and the impact their behaviors have on others, deepening their self-awareness. Group therapy sessions encourage teamwork and collaborative problem-solving. It is developmentally appropriate for adolescents to be more receptive to feedback from peers rather than adults, which is why young people are oftentimes more open to participating in this treatment modality. Studies have found that high cohesion groups reach their goals more readily, and group members feel more secure about their functions and contributions.

Group therapy for teens with social anxiety offers a dynamic and empowering approach to building confidence. The collective nature of the group provides a supportive environment where shared experiences, peer support, and guided therapeutic interventions combine to create a comprehensive strategy for addressing social anxiety. Through interactive activities, facilitated discussions, and a focus on building social skills, group therapy becomes a transformative space where teenagers not only confront their social fears but also forge connections and develop the confidence needed to navigate the complexities of social interactions.
