FAMILY FOCUSED TREATMENT

When one member of a family system is suffering, it affects the entire system.

There is little doubt that the relationship between parents and their children changes during the teenage years, yet the role of parents in an adolescent’s life remains just as important. Our work is often about repairing or strengthening these primary relationships, which may have become strained or damaged over time.

Relationships become tense through any number of outside stressors from finances, work, trauma, through to loss and illness. Our goal is to help a person think about how relationship patterns have become strained and to help give members of the family healthier ways to respond to each other and these stressors.

FAMILY THERAPY SESSIONS

Regardless of the family structure, family therapy can be extremely beneficial to help heal the family dynamic as a whole.

The majority of families we treat are not local to Malibu or Los Angeles and often come to us from out of state or even internationally.  Regardless of distance or time zones, we strive to ensure that communication between parent and child is easy for both. Our staff understands that staying in touch, checking in and continuing family connection is important to the families we help. Our team approach to treatments helps us accommodate and work around you and your family’s schedule.

We offer a variety of ways for families to participate in and offer their support to the treatment process. Parents are welcome to call in and speak to any member of our staff about their child at any time. This is in addition to the regular contact the treatment team will establish with family members. Furthermore, our clients are welcome to use the phone to call their family members when they need to connect.

In order to maintain continued involvement in their child’s treatment process, we provide regularly scheduled phone updates with parents and their treatment team.

Family therapy sessions can be conducted over phone over secure videoconference systems or in person to make it as easy as possible to participate in this vital aspect of treatment.

FAMILY COMMUNICATION

At the foundation of all our relationships is the ability to communicate effectively. When we are able to express our thoughts, feelings and ideas about each other, to each other, in a way that is understood by the other, we start to feel closer and more connected. In families, this need to be understood and connected is becoming increasingly important in a world fragmented with social media and pressure to succeed.

However, ‘Communication Skills 101’ classes are rarely taught in schools and colleges and are, in general, lacking from most educational priorities. As a result, we have a tendency to pick up some habits that limit our ability to encourage open communication with others. Without realizing it, we are often guilty of stifling what is exchanged in our conversations, which can lead to some problematic patterns in our family and close relationships. For healthy communication in the family to be restored, it’s fundamental ensure that every person is heard, understood and valued.

At Pacific Teen Treatment, one of our primary goals is to ensure that your family leaves with skills and tools to facilitate communication. We believe that these skills lead to a deeper sense of connection and openness that facilitates healthier behaviors and relationships.

FAMILY SYSTEMS

We work primarily using a Family Systems way of thinking. This way of approaching families encourages family members to think of the issues that brought them into treatment in terms of a ‘system’.  As with any system, individual members can influence one another’s feelings and behaviors in many complicated ways.

With this in mind, an adolescent who is struggling will work with the family to understand the causes, impacts and relationship dynamics that are at play that maybe contributing. An approach that encourages the whole family to work together helps individuals move away from blaming and towards individual responsibility. This approach often produces dramatic changes in the client and the family as a whole.

With decades of research behind it and in our own experience, systemic family therapy has a particularly supportive evidence base for many of the reasons adolescents and families come to treatment.

MULTIFAMILY-GROUP

Our weekly Multifamily Group brings together core elements from group therapy, family work, and experiential exercises that highlight the need for effective emotional communication. The interactive group reinforces our work around vulnerability and connection between teens and family members to address anxiety, depression, addiction, family conflict, and more. Our focus is on healing and repairing relationships, and Multifamily Group is where we often see the magic happening.

Over the years, Pacific Teen Treatment has developed a unique system for the Multifamily Group. By combining many of the treatment components in a supportive and creative way, the group delivers powerful and moving moments.
