Mind-body practices aim to strengthen the connection between the emotional, mental, and physical aspects of ourselves. Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC) further explains that mind-body practices involve a “group of healing techniques that enhance the mind’s interactions with bodily function, to induce relaxation and to improve overall health and well-being.” These techniques fall under the larger umbrella of holistic medicine, which as explained by Healthline is a “whole-body approach to healthcare [that] aims to improve health and wellness through the body, mind, and soul.” Mind-body practices serve as powerful tools for enhancing teenage mental wellness by emphasizing the connection between the mind and the body. Various examples of mind-body practices include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Massage therapy
  • Reiki: is defined as “an energy healing technique that promotes relaxation, reduces stress and anxiety through gentle touch.”
  • Tai Chi: is defined as a “noncompetitive, self-paced system of gentle physical exercise and stretching.”
  • Yoga
  • Meditation: is defined as “a set of techniques that are intended to encourage a heightened state of awareness and focused attention.”
  • Acupuncture: is defined as “an originally Chinese practice of inserting fine needles through the skin at specific points, especially to cure disease or relieve pain.”
  • Biofeedback: is explained as “a mind-body therapy that can improve physical and mental health.”

Mind-body practices are frequently used in comprehensive treatment plans for various health conditions (e.g., obesity, insomnia, fibromyalgia, gastrointestinal problems, depression, etc.) that directly impact teenage mental health. Additionally, research reveals that this “large and diverse group of practices can substantially affect neurophysiology in both healthy individuals and those with various psychiatric disorders.” They offer a multifaceted approach to enhancing teenage mental wellness, providing teenagers with the ability to proactively manage stress, regulate emotions, and foster a positive mindset that contributes to their overall well-being. Engaging in mind-body practices empowers teenagers by arming them with tools for self-care and stress management. This sense of empowerment and self-efficacy enhances confidence and encourages a proactive approach to mental well-being. Through learning and mastering mind-body techniques, adolescents establish a foundation for long-term mental wellness and resilience.
