COMPUTER ADDICTION, SIGNS AND TREATMENT FOR TEENS

Computer addiction is one of the common types of technology addiction that plagues the youth of America.

General Information

The reality is that countless young people will rely on computers for many different reasons. Computers are used for education purposes and learning how to properly use a computer can help to set a teen up for success later in his or her life. On the flip side, the continued and increasing reliance upon the use of computers can be harmful to teenagers, if not monitored. A computer addiction is not necessarily when a young person is using a computer for an extended period of time in a productive fashion. There are uncountable ways to productively pass time on a computer. It is, however, not uncommon for a teen struggling with computer addiction to simply scroll and stare at the screen, being completely unproductive. Teens with a computer addiction will often suffer from an inability to sleep, and unhealthy weight fluctuations.

Signs & Symptoms

There are a number of signs and symptoms that can occur as a result of a young person being addicted to computers. Some of the possibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Weight fluctuation
  • Lowered attention spanAggressive behaviors
  • Stress injuries of the wrists and/ or hands
  • Lack of interest in previously enjoyable activities
  • Social isolation

Every teenager is different and may exhibit varying combinations of the above examples, if he or she suffers from a computer addiction. While there can be many benefits to a young person using computers, when it becomes a compulsive behavior it can result in negative consequences.

Treatment

Pacific Teen Treatment offers a variety of therapeutic modalities to help treat clients struggling with computer addiction, in a personalized way. We carefully create individualized treatment plans that are unique to each of our clients. Some of the therapeutic modalities that we utilize include: talk therapy, expressive arts therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), and dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT).

At Pacific Teen Treatment, we find it essential to help treat an entire person, as a whole. Though therapy is our main focus, we also emphasize the importance of proper eating habits, regular exercise, and obtaining adequate sleep. Our clients will abide by a daily schedule, which can be beneficial for learning and practicing healthy daily habits. We encourage our teens to participate in daily relaxation techniques such as yoga and/ or mediation, to help regulate emotions and promote connecting to and checking in with one’s body. Providing our clients with a known schedule that is filled with healthy and self-healing activities create a solid foundation from which continued recovery can occur.
